The error log study method, and how to keep one going
An error log, or wrong answer notebook, records every question you miss and why. It's one of the most recommended techniques for exams like the LSAT, SAT, MCAT and professional certifications. The catch is keeping it up, so here's how to do it with the least effort.

How to run an error log
Capture every miss
Log the question, what you answered and the right answer. Include guesses that happened to be right.
Name the cause
Content gap, misread question, mixed-up concepts, timing, or carelessness. One or two words are enough.
Write the fix
One sentence on what you'd do differently, such as “check whether it says EXCEPT”.
Re-test on a schedule
Redo the question after 1, 3, 7 and 15 days. It's done only when you can get it right cold.
Three ways to keep an error log
| Notebook or spreadsheet | QuizBao mistake book | |
|---|---|---|
| Capturing mistakes | By hand, a few minutes each | Automatic when you answer wrong |
| Re-testing | Cover the answer yourself | Real re-tests with the answer hidden |
| Scheduling reviews | Up to you | Automatic spaced review with reminders |
| Spotting patterns | Count by hand or use filters | Accuracy by chapter and type, and careless vs. unknown by time |
| Notes on why | Yes | Yes: write on the question with Apple Pencil, or type |
| Printing | Already on paper, or print the sheet | Export to Word with attempts and your last answer |
What to look for in your log
- The same topic several times: go back and study it, more questions won't help
- Lots of careless errors: slow down on reading, particularly words like NOT and EXCEPT
- Slow correct answers: you know it but can't afford the time, so drill for speed
- Mistakes that come back: your fix wasn't specific enough, so rewrite it

FAQ
Should I use Excel or a notebook?
Use whichever you'll keep up. A spreadsheet is easy to sort, a notebook is easy to review anywhere. If logging is what stops you, let an app capture mistakes automatically.
Do I log questions I guessed right?
Yes, if you weren't sure. A lucky guess is a mistake that hasn't cost you yet.
How often should I review?
Short sessions daily beat one long weekly review. Spacing them out at 1, 3, 7 and 15 days works well.
Can I use QuizBao for questions from a book?
Yes. Import them as a file, take photos with AI Import, or type in only the ones you missed.
